Nearly fifty years on it's hard to comprehend just how important Chicago was in the history of soul music. Today there is little regional music anywhere in the US and certainly no regional labels servicing their populations with local talent the way many did in the early 1960s. Chess, Vee-Jay, Curtom and Mercury spring readily to mind but this collection highlights another Chicago cluster of merit and importance.
Inspired by three critically acclaimed volumes of Chicago soul released by Charly Records in 1998 Move With The Groove celebrates a group of labels founded by the Leaner Brothers: Mar-V-Lus, One-Derful, M-Pac and Toddlin' Town. This 50-track selection retains many of the classics included on those ground-breaking CDs alongside 20 titles not originally featured.
The set includes Otis Clay, Alvin Cash, Harold Burrage, Betty Everett and Lonnie Brooks alongside arguably the label's most famous track, 'Shake A Tail Feather' by The Five Dutones. One of the greatest dance 45rpms of all time, the song was taken to international fame when performed by Ray Charles in the movie, The Blues Brothers, while Mar-V-Lus' biggest seller was undoubtedly the infectious 'Twine Time' by Alvin Cash.
Housed in a deluxe digibook, this 2CD set pays fitting tribute to one of Chicago's great music powerhouses with a memorabilia-laden booklet complete with a full history of the labels and potted biographies of the featured artists. What better title than 'Move With The Groove' for a collection which explores soul through dance beats, doo wop, blues and funk. To paraphrase Symtec & Wylie's track it's 'Sockin' Soul Power' all the way!
